Southern Ocean Medical Center Nurses to Vote on Union Representation

Registered nurses at Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Ocean Medical Center will have the opportunity to vote whether to remove the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) as their bargaining representative. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will conduct the democratic election, and nurses will cast their votes anonymously on November 13 and 14.

At least 30 percent of Southern Ocean Medical Center nurses organized themselves, signed a petition to decertify HPAE and filed the document with the NLRB in September 2018. The union attempted to block the initial petition, but the NLRB dismissed it anyhow based on a legal technicality. The nurses took it upon themselves to collect more signatures and filed a new petition with the NLRB on October 17, 2018.

Meanwhile, Hackensack Meridian Health settled a second labor contract last week with HPAE. The union will conduct informational meetings and a ratification vote for approximately 860 Palisades Medical Center team members on November 2. Team members at The Harborage, a long-term care facility, ratified a new labor contract in September.

Negotiations are ongoing for approximately 1,200 nurses at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and for about 290 nurses at Southern Ocean Medical Center. The hospital will continue to negotiate in good faith with the union while nurses’ effort to remove HPAE continues.
