Meet Our Faculty

Robin Winter, MD, MMMRobin Winter
Chair

Dr. Robin O. Winter, MD, MMM is Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Centre. He is also Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Family Medicine for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Winter serves as the ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the Hackensack Meridian Health Central Region. Dr. Winter was the JFK Family Medicine Residency program Director from 1989-2023.

After receiving a BA from Haverford College and a Medical Degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Winter did his Family Medicine Residency at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, New Jersey. To pursue his interest in the biopsychosocial model, he obtained a Certificate in Family Therapy from Trinity Counseling Service in Princeton, New Jersey. Board certified in both Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr. Winter earned a Master of Medical Management degree at Carnegie Mellon University. He was Medical Director of JFK Hartwyck Nursing, Convalescent and Rehabilitation Centers from 1990-2020, and was on their Board from 2001-2018. He is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and an Associate Professor at St. George’s University School of Medicine. A long-standing member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), Dr. Winter was on the Editorial Board of their journal, Family Medicine, from 2012-2018. He is a Past-President of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and served a seven-year term on the Family Medicine Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Winter is also the 2019 recipient of the AAFP/AFMRD Nikitas J. Zervanos Outstanding Program Director Award. In addition to various research papers, Dr. Winter has published a number of articles on the use of literature and the humanities in Family Medicine residency education.


Rosa MendozaRosa M. Mendoza, MD, MS
Residency Program Director

Dr. Mendoza attended the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her Family Medicine Residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a track in Obstetrics. She then went on to complete a Primary Care Clinician Research Fellowship in Community Health at Columbia University where she obtained a master’s degree in epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Mendoza served as the Family Medicine Clerkship Director for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine from 2019 until April of 2023, when she transitioned to residency Program Director. Dr. Mendoza greatly enjoys women’s health, taking care of vulnerable patient populations and teaching and working closely with both residents and medical students. In her free time, Dr. Mendoza enjoys the outdoors, knitting and spending time with her family. Dr. Mendoza is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Adity Bhattacharyya, MD
Associate Director

Dr. Bhattacharyya received her M.B.B.S. from Lady Hardinge Medical College at the University of Delhi, India. Before coming to the United States to complete her residency in Family Medicine, Dr. Bhattacharyya continued her medical education in Europe obtaining her board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She then traveled to St. Georges University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies where she was an Associate Professor and Director of Physical Diagnosis and the Director of the Simon Bolivar Clinic at the university. She completed her Family Medicine residency training in the UMDNJ Family Practice Residency Program at St. Mary Hospital in Hoboken, NJ in 1997. From 1997 until 2006, she was the Associate Program Director of the UMDNJ Family Practice Residency Program at St. Mary Hospital in Hoboken, NJ. In 2006, she moved to the UMDNJ RWJMS Family Medicine Residency Program at Centra-State Medical Center in Freehold, NJ where she was the Director of Women’s Health and Curriculum development. From 2009 to 2016, Dr. Bhattacharyya was the Program Director at the Rutgers RWJMS Family Medicine Residency at Capital Health. Dr. Bhattacharyya is a member and fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a member of the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine. She is also the Past President and Board Chair of the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians.

Joy-Lynne Carnes, MD, CMD
Assistant Director

Dr. Carnes went to Medical School at Ross University School of Medicine and completed both her Family Medicine Residency and Geriatric Fellowship at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. After graduating from her Geriatric Fellowship, Dr. Carnes was a faculty member at the Rutgers-RWJMS Family Medicine Residency at Capital Health System in Trenton, NJ until joining the faculty at the JFK Family Medicine Residency Program in 2016. Board certified in both Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr. Carnes enjoys teaching and working closely with the residents and medical students. She is also a Certified Medical Director and serves as Medical Director of JFK Hartwyck Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers. Dr. Carnes is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.”

Sung Chae, MDChae Sung, M.D.
Assistant Director

Dr. Chae graduated with honors from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology & Society. She received her Medical Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA and continued her training with an OB fellowship at Family Medicine Spokane in Spokane, WA. Thereafter, she worked at Christ Community Medical Clinic in Memphis, TN before joining the JFK faculty. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, as well as an instructor in Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics. Her interests include group medical visits as well as Integrative Medicine.

Lauren GuthLauren Guth, PsyD, MEd
Assistant Director, Behavioral Science

Dr. Guth graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Studio Art. She received her Doctorate in Psychology and Masters in Education of Human Sexuality from Widener University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Center in Concord, NH and joined the JFK Faculty in 2012. In 2017, Dr. Guth completed the STFM Behavioral Science/Family Systems Educator Fellowship. She is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a Core Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at The Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. Dr. Guth is a member of the American Psychological Association, New Jersey Psychological Association, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Her interests include group medical visits, resident wellness, and interdisciplinary team building. In her spare time, she likes to do yoga, eat good food, and spend time with her husband, son and two dachshunds.

Sridevi KandulaSridevi Kandula, MD
Assistant Director

Dr. Kandula received her Medical Degree from the Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Pondicherry, India. She went on to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at JIPMER. She is also a Diplomate of the National Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology of India, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She completed a Family Medicine Residency in the UNM (1 +2) Roswell Family Medicine Residency program at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, NM where she served as chief resident. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She joined the faculty at JFK Medical Center in 2010, and her interests include reproductive medicine and public health.

Harini Kumar, MD
Assistant Director
Clinical Skills Faculty | Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine

Dr. Harini Kumar graduated cum laude from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She received her medical degree from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson in New Jersey. Here she developed an interest in urban underserved medicine, while working in student run clinics in Camden, NJ. She completed her residency in Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. During that time, she developed a passion for education and teaching that led her to complete a Faculty Development Fellowship at Montefiore. Through completing a Master’s level Certificate in Medical Education, she acquired skills in both curriculum development and evaluation. Her fellowship educational research project involved implementing and evaluating a curriculum on the topic of building resident comfort in communication skills during the gynecological exam.

Dr. Kumar previously worked as the Associate Program Director and Assistant Medical Director at the Family Medicine Residency Program in Hoboken, NJ. Currently, in addition to taking care of patients and teaching JFK Family Medicine residents, Dr. Kumar works as faculty for the Clinical Skills program at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Dr. Kumar is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Debbie Metz, M.D.Deborah Metz, MD
Preceptor

Dr. Deborah Metz graduated summa cum laude from Bloomsburg State University in Bloomsburg, PA with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication disorders. She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

She completed her Family Medicine residency training at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Metz is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and obtained a Six Sigma Green Belt.

John Metz, M.D.John Metz, MD, CAQSM
Associate Director

Dr. Metz graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He received his medical degree in 1994 from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his Family Medicine residency training at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, MD. He then served the next 5 years in the Air Force as a Family Medicine Physician at Andrews Air Force Base, Osan Air Base (in South Korea), and the United States Air Force Academy.

Along the way, he completed a one-year Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. Dr. Metz is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.

Charlene MilneCharlene Milne, MD
Associate Director

Dr. Milne graduated cum laude from Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and biology. She received her Medical Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. She completed her Family Medicine residency training at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Milne is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Adolescent Medicine. She is certified in Advanced Life Support Obstetrics. Dr. Milne has been at JFK since 1992 and is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Assistant Professor at St. George’s University School of Medicine.

Dipesh Patel, D.O.Dipesh Patel, DO
Assistant Director

Dr. Patel went to Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA where he achieved a BS in Biology. After college, he attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA.

Dr. Patel then went on to complete a Traditional Rotating Intern Year at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY and his Family Medicine Residency at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY.



Michelle WilksMichelle Wilks, MD
Preceptor

Dr. Wilks graduated magna cum laude from Yeshiva University in New York, NY with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and pre-health sciences. She received her Medical Degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY.

Dr. Wilks completed her Family Medicine residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Wilks is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.


Joseph WalterJoseph Walter, PharmD, BCPS
Ambulatory Care Pharmacist

Joseph Walter, PharmD, BCPS graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with a Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2018. He completed a Postgraduate Year 1 Residency Program at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in West Haven, CT followed by a Postgraduate Year 2 Residency Program specializing in ambulatory care at CoxHealth in Springfield, MO. Dr. Walter serves as the ambulatory care pharmacist for the JFK Family Medicine Residency Program and as a Clinical Assistant Professor for Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and is a member of American Society of Health System Pharmacists. His interests include chronic disease state management, polypharmacy and medication affordability.
