Our Institute was founded in 1992 by neurosurgeon Dr. Russ Zapulla and neurologist Dr. Martin Gizzi, both from Mount Sinai. These founders envisioned a collaborative team of neurologists and neurosurgeons who would focus on exemplary clinical care, education of neurology residents, medical students and future advanced practice providers, and translational research in the Neurosciences.

Our core faculty represent a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons and a physiatrist. Each of our physicians has a dedicated subspecialty focus which enhances the level of experience and expertise to support your education and development. Our founding principle was centered on multidisciplinary collaboration with faculty offices, ambulatory clinic and translational research facilities housed together on the main ground floor of the JFK University Medical Center.

We represent the central region hub of Hackensack Meridian Health, the largest health system in NJ, and provide neurology residency and fellowship training programs in the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The JFK Neuroscience Institute is considered to be the best training program in NJ. A few years ago, we became a department of Neuroscience, a unique combination that exemplifies the true integration of neurology and neurosurgery. We are organized around Centers of Excellence, which are co-managed by neurology and neurosurgery clinical leaders, providing expertise in neurovascular disease, movement disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, sleep impairment, headache, cognitive and behavioral disorders, neuro-ophthalmology and neuro-otology for both adults and children.

We have the largest neurology residency program in NJ and have accredited fellowships in stroke, neurocritical care, neurointervention, clinical neurophysiology, sleep medicine and headache medicine. The combination of clinical trials and funded translational research will provide you with ample opportunities to explore clinical and basic science research.
