The JFK Johnson Residency Program consistently receives Five Stars—the highest rating—for its Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Training program from Doximity, the leading network for U.S. physicians. An integral part of the training is the 1:1 attending resident ratio and the volume of patients and procedures that every resident experiences.

The medical knowledge curriculum is highly structured and dovetails into a senior board review course for part one of the PM&R Board Exam. The course utilizes the best-selling textbook, “Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review” edited by Sara Cuccurullo, M.D., the Chair, Vice President and Medical Director at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute for over 25 years. Many of the chapter authors are accomplished attendings serving as faculty. The JFK Johnson Residency Program has had a 100 percent Board Pass rate for this exam for over 20 years.

The program, offered through the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The three-year program, beginning at the PGY-2 level, is committed to providing exposure to diverse clinical cases and giving residents extensive opportunities for hands-on training with electrodiagnostic testing, Botox injections for treatment of spasticity, baclofen pump refills, and peripheral joint injections. Residents graduating from the program report feeling highly confident in their medical knowledge, clinical and procedural skills, and have a 100 percent match rate into PM&R fellowships in brain injury medicine, pain medicine, spinal cord injury, pediatrics and sports medicine.

Many graduated residents have become leaders in the field, serving as chairs, residency program directors, researchers and fellowship directors. In addition, they have started successful private practices and have hired other graduates to expand their practices. Since 2014, the department has grown from 10 to 32 physicians, many of whom were residents or fellows that graduated from the program.

The PM&R Program also offers two ACGME accredited one-year Fellowship training programs, offering one open position per year in the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship and one open position per year in the Pain Medicine Fellowship.
