Multi-Institutional Study Finds Positive Outcomes for Single-Port Robotic Transvesical Surgery for BPH

Study shows low complication rates and quick recovery for most patients

Multi-Institutional Study

The first-ever multi-institutional study assessing the outcomes of single-port (SP) robotic-assisted simple prostatectomy through the transvesical approach finds low complication rates and quick recovery for most patients.

The study was conducted at three institutions, and involved 91 consecutive surgical patients between February 2019 and November 2021. Surgeries were performed by three experienced surgeons, including Mutahar Ahmed, M.D., director, Urologic Bladder Cancer Program, using the da Vinci® SP robotic surgical system.

The surgery, a novel surgical option in the management of large prostatic glands, involves a suprapubic incision and transvesical access. Researchers collected data from patients before surgery, to establish baseline characteristics, and then followed up with patients in the months following surgery.

The study found that most patients experienced a pain-free procedure, same-day discharge, short Foley catheter duration, low complication rate, and quick recovery.

Physicians involved in the study from Hackensack Meridian Health included Tanner Corse, M.D., Department of Urology Research Fellow, Mutahar Ahmed, M.D., director, Urologic Bladder Cancer Program, and Michael Stifelman, M.D., Chair of Urology and Director of Robotic Surgery. Other institutions involved in the study included Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio and Department of Urology, College of Medicine, University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois.
