Hackensack Meridian Health offers comprehensive Life Support Training Services for both community members and health care professionals, including CPR training, EMT training, continuing education, and much more.

Life Support Classes For Health Professionals:

ACLS Provider Course (2 Day Course):

  • The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider course is a two-day course, designed to train health care professionals in managing patients with acute cardiac illnesses using the most current methods available.

ACLS Provider Renewal Course (1 Day Course with Pre-Course Work):

  • The ACLS course builds on the foundation of life-saving Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care provider skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. This advanced course for experienced critical care providers highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care, and immediate post-cardiac arrest care. Please note that this one day renewal course requires completion of Pre-Course work online. This advanced course is for experienced critical Care providers only.

CPR - BLS Provider In Person Course:

  • The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) classroom course is designed to provide a wide variety of health care professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. This course is for health care professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other life-saving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

HeartCode® Skills Check for BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS:

  • The American Heart Association’s Heartcode® BLS, ACLS or PALS Skills Check-Off Session is designed for health care professionals who need to know how to perform BLS, ACLS or PALS and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings. The skills verification will take between 15-30 minutes, per discipline.

PALS Provider Course (2 Day Course):

  • This two-day course teaches Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) according to the standards of the American Heart Association. This course is designed to develop the skills of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and technicians who are regularly involved in emergency cardiac care delivery. The course features discussions and practical skill stations which help develop skills necessary for the delivery of emergency cardiac care.

PALS Provider Renewal Course (1 Day Course with Pre-Course Work):

  • This one-day course is for those individuals who need to renew their PALS certification. The renewal course includes discussion and practical skill stations designed to review all topics pertaining to pediatric emergency cardiac care. This class is strictly for those who have completed a full PALS course in the past. If you are unsuccessful in a renewal session, you must take the 2 day initial course. There is no opportunity to retake a renewal course. Please note that this 1 day renewal course requires completion of pre-course work online.

Life Support Classes for EMS Providers

EMT Basic Intensive Course (8 Week):

  • This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of EMT-Basic, who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Basic. This course includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service.

EMT Initial Course (5 ½ Months):

  • This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of EMT-Basic, who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Basic. This course includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service.

EMT Refresher A, B, and C In-Person & Hybrid:

  • These courses are an EMT Refresher Series taught via the William G. Voelkel EMT Training Program.

PHTLS In-Person & Hybrid Course:

  • The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians’ (NAEMT) Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multisystem trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. This is an 8 hour/1 day skills completion to receive your CEUs.

Continuing Education Credits:

  • These courses are offered in person and virtually for EMTs needing CEs to re-certify their EMT certification.

Life Support Classes For Health Professionals (Hackensack Meridian Health Team Members Only):

HeartCode® On-Line BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS:

  • HeartCode® BLS, ACLS, and PALS is the American Heart Association’s (AHA) web-based, blended learning self-paced instructional program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual health care settings. Providers must first complete the online cognitive portion of the HeartCode® course and then test their skills with an AHA Instructor or on a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) system/simulation station. Upon successful completion of the cognitive and skills tests, students will receive a course completion card.

  • The American Heart Association’s Heartcode® BLS, ACLS or PALS Skills Check-Off Session is designed for health care professionals who need to know how to perform BLS, ACLS or PALS and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)® 8th Edition - Online Course/Skill Session:

  • The Neonatal Resuscitation Program has been designed by the American Academy of Pediatrics to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in resuscitation. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is an educational program that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation.

Life Support Classes for Community Members

Family & Friends CPR:

  • This course is intended for those who want to learn life-saving rescue skills for newborn to adult. Participants will learn prevention of the most common fatal injuries, the chain of survival, CPR skills, and relief of a foreign body in the choking person.

HeartSaver® CPR AED:

  • The course provides training for anyone who wants to learn basic CPR, use of an AED, and obtain a Heartsaver® course completion card. Includes information on adult and child CPR, AED use (adult/child), choking (adult/child), using a mask or barrier device, phoning for help, and optional modules in infant CPR and choking.

HeartSaver® First Aid:

  • Heartsaver® First Aid is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies.

STOP THE BLEED®:

  • The STOP THE BLEED® course is a class created by the American College of Surgeons and taught around the country by qualified instructors, at no cost. This in-person, hands-on class teaches the basics of identifying and treating life-threatening bleeding using tourniquets, wound packing and pressure dressings. It teaches what “immediate responders,” i.e., bystanders can do to stop potentially fatal bleeding before emergency responders can arrive.

A traditional CPR BLS provider class is an in-person 4-hour class designed to provide a wide variety of health care professionals the ability to recognize several life threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The HeartCode® blended learning courses are designed and structured to deliver quality resuscitation education regardless of where providers are located and gives them more control to complete the course at their own pace. Providers first complete the online cognitive portion of the HeartCode course & then complete an in-person skills verification check.

HeartCode® Skills Check Verification sessions are Monday – Friday. Times vary. Please check our schedule.
