Living in New Jersey

Wellness

Resident wellness is the cornerstone of our program. We prioritize physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing to improve resident quality of life and to optimize their ability to provide exceptional patient care. Our program offers a range of activities to help residents unwind and support their mental wellbeing. We provide “comp days” and “wellness days” during electives, allowing residents time to manage personal responsibilities, attend appointments, and recharge.

Our wellness program is led by a dedicated Third-Year Wellness Associate Chief and a wellness committee composed of residents from all classes. This committee is responsible for organizing wellness events and fostering a supportive, healthy environment for our residents. The committee focuses on various factors that can impact resident wellness, such as stress, burnout, work-life balance, and mental health. The committee works to develop and implement strategies to help residents manage these challenges, including providing resources for stress reduction, mental health support, and promoting work-life balance. Additionally, Hackensack Meridian Health provides 24/7 behavioral health services for team members that can be accessed remotely.

Annual HUMC IM Residency Traditions

Intern Welcome BBQ

To conclude intern orientation week, we host a welcome dinner that includes current residents, fellows, and attendings. This tradition provides a warm introduction to the team and an opportunity for new interns to connect with their colleagues and mentors.

Residents are given a day off from clinical duties to participate in an annual retreat, where they will bond together. This retreat includes a one-night stay at Long Beach Island, providing a valuable opportunity for relaxation and team-building away from the clinical setting at the beach.
