Encouraging Professional Growth and Development
Residents and faculty actively participate and interact in weekly didactics, including various conferences, Grand Rounds, case studies, lectures and Journal club/reading. Didactics are held at Hackensack University Medical Center with protected time for resident education on Tuesday and Friday morning.Our Didactic Schedule
Performance and Quality Review1st Tuesday 7:00 – 800 AM
One resident (from each participating site) presents the total and index case numbers for the previous month, followed by an in-depth presentation of any morbidities and mortalities from that institution. Presentations are made using PowerPoint slides, including a literature review.
Grand Rounds
2nd Tuesday 7:00 – 9:00 AM
This is a didactic lecture by a visiting speaker on the topic of specific urologic interest. Following the formal Grand Rounds lecture, visiting faculty meet with students and residents to review in-depth with question and answer sessions.
Uropathology Conference
3rd Tuesday 7:00 – 8:00 AM
Uro-pathology conference is comprised of a pathologist, radiologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist and urology faculty, residents, medical students, APNs, nurses and urology database manager. Specific cases are presented with slides and descriptions. Residents are asked to analyze slide material and derive a diagnosis, and correlate with the clinical presentation. The uro-pathologist elaborates on the pathologic findings and provides context. The goal of this conference is resident education in urologic pathology followed by a detailed discussion with urology attendings and the expert oncology faculty.
Uroradiology Conference
4th Tuesday 7:00 – 8:00 AM
Uro-Radiology Conference is comprised of radiologist, and urology faculty, residents, medical students, APNs, nurses and urology database manager. Specific cases are presented; these may include: (a) patients who are being presented as a diagnostic and management dilemma (b) patients who have undergone surgery, and also have a pathological diagnosis. Residents are asked to analyze radiographic images and derive a diagnosis, and correlate this with the clinical presentation. The uro-radiologist elaborates on the radiologic findings and provides context. The goal of this conference is resident education in urologic radiology.
Pediatric Urology Conference
1st Friday 7:00 – 8:00 AM
Conference is based on case presentations followed by didactic presentations. Essential topics in pediatric urology will be covered over a two year period. The presentation is coordinated by the pediatric urology resident and assigned to all residents on a rotating basis, except for the chief residents. Some of the conference didactic presentations will also be done by the pediatric urology faculty.
Didactic Lectures
3rd Friday 7:00 – 8:00 AM
Didactic lectures are given by the urology faculty on core topics in preparation for the in-service examination. Additional lectures are given on biostatistics, practice management, coding, medical records compliance, ethics and professionalism, and fatigue recognition and management to further enhance knowledge.
Campbell's Review
2nd, 4th, & 5th Friday 7:00 – 8:00 AM
Resident led review of a chapter in Campbell’s urology with faculty mentorship. All essential topics in Urology are covered.
Journal Club
4th Tuesday 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Relevant articles from urologic and non-urologic journals are chosen by urology faculty and residents. Each resident is assigned one article for in-depth discussion with faculty over dinner. The educational goals are to critically evaluate the scientific literature, gain new knowledge, and acquire discretionary and analytical skills in incorporating new knowledge in practice.
