Pediatric Concussion Care

Individualized Children’s Concussion Clinic in New Jersey

If your child has experienced a bump, fall, or hit to the head, it’s natural to feel concerned. Concussions and other forms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children are more common than many parents realize. In fact, 6.8% of children in the U.S. have experienced concussion symptoms at some point in their lives.

At Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health, we provide specialized pediatric concussion care across New Jersey. Whether your child is experiencing dizziness, nausea, confusion, headaches, or changes in mood, our experts are here to support your family with individualized, child-centered care.

What To Do If You Suspect a Concussion

If your child recently suffered a head injury and is showing any symptoms, such as headache, dizziness, vomiting, or disorientation, take action:

  1. Call your child's health care provider
  2. Visit urgent care or the emergency room if symptoms seem serious (such as your child loses consciousness or appears disoriented)
  3. Schedule an appointment with a pediatric concussion specialist at Hackensack Meridian Children's Health.

Inside Our Pediatric Concussion Clinic

Studies show that children tend to recover faster when a pediatric concussion specialist is involved early in their care. Our Children’s Concussion Clinics in New Jersey use advanced tools to assess symptoms and create personalized care plans.

Here’s how we evaluate and support your child:

  • ImPACT Testing: Measures memory, recognition, processing speed, and reaction time to help our specialists personalize treatment.
  • BESS (Balance Error Scoring System): Assesses your child’s balance under different conditions (e.g., eyes open/closed, standing on a soft pad).
  • Cerebellar Function Tests: Evaluates coordination and motor control using a series of movement-based tests.
  • Eye Convergence Assessment: Checks for blurred or double vision by tracking eye coordination.

Once a diagnosis is made, we develop a tailored concussion management plan that may involve coordination with our neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other specialists. We also address nutrition, academic support, and emotional well-being to support your child’s full recovery.

School and Community Support

We know that healing doesn’t stop at the clinic. That’s why we work directly with your child’s school, coaches, and community to ensure a safe return to learning and play.
