Innovative Approaches to Orthopedic Surgery

Robotic and navigation technology offers advanced precision and accuracy for individual surgical needs and are particularly helpful in complex orthopedic surgical cases. Various technologies are used for hip, knee and spine procedures and can help physicians more precisely plan for the surgery as well as adjust course during surgery with more exactness. Benefits of robotic and navigation technologies include accurate placement and alignment of implants, which may result in faster recovery and less pain for patients.

Knee Replacement

  • The CORI Surgical System is a robotic-assisted technology for total knee replacement. It uses 3D digital modeling to create a surgical plan customized to the patients’ unique anatomy. Maintaining more of the patient’s natural bone and ligaments helps maintain more of a natural rhythm and function.
  • The Mako System is a robotic-arm used in full and partial robotic knee replacement surgery. It utilizes a computed tomography (CT)-based 3D rendering of a patient’s anatomy taken days before the surgery to facilitate a more personalized and detailed surgical plan for the procedure.
  • The ROSA (Robotic Surgical Assistant) is used to perform total knee-replacement surgery. It uses X-rays, instead of a CT-scan, to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee for a personalized implant; this approach eliminates the extra step, and additional radiation exposure of the CT-scan.
  • The TSolution One System is used during a robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery for the treatment of severe osteoarthritis. This system utilizes 3-D pre-surgical technology to create a personalized plan, which offers precise implant alignment for better fit and choice of implant options.

Hip Replacement

  • Intellijoint HIP System is an optical navigation system for total hip replacement and total hip revision surgeries. Rather than relying on a robot to aid in the surgery, the Intellijoint system uses imaging and spatial markers and navigation to enhance the precision of the implant placement.
  • The Mako System is also capable of supporting total hip replacement surgery.

Spine Surgery

Mazor Robotics Renaissance Spine Surgery is a guidance system for certain minimally-invasive spine surgery. It uses a CT-based 3D simulation of the patient’s spine, which is created before surgery to pre-plan the best surgical course.

The hip and knee replacement programs at several of our medical centers have earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for disease-specific excellence, safety, quality and patient-centered care.

A personalized treatment plan is developed for each and every patient, based upon each person’s individual needs, goals and personal priorities.

  • As a leader in innovation, two Hackensack Meridian Health physicians contributed to the design of the ROSA robotic technology and Hackensack University Medical Center is a center of excellence for training other surgeons.
  • Hackensack University Medical Center was the first on the East Coast to use the newest generation of the TSolution One robot, performed by a Hackensack physician who participated in the investigational clinical trial to bring the technology to the market as a state-of-the-art alternative to traditional knee replacement.
  • Hackensack Meridian Health is the only health system in NJ that offers access to all four robotic assisted platforms for hip and knee replacement.
