Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute offers a one-year ACGME accredited multidisciplinary fellowship opportunity in Pain Medicine based out of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. The goal of our fellowship is to train future leaders in pain medicine with an emphasis on comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches to pain. Our fellowship team consists of board certified physicians in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurology, Anesthesiology and Psychiatry as well as experts in Pain Psychology.

The fellowship integrates the core competencies of pain medicine including Interventional Pain Management, Acute and Chronic Pain Management, General Musculoskeletal Care, Pain Pharmacology and Addiction Medicine, Cancer Pain and Hospice/Palliative Care, Pain Psychology and Mind/Body Medicine, as well as Post-Operative Pain Care. In addition to experience in the above specialties, the fellow is involved in clinical research and quality improvement projects throughout the year.

Locations:

The fellow will engage in supervised hands-on patient care in the following locations: JFK University Medical Center, JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, JFK Mediplex Surgical Center and Roosevelt Care Center in Edison, NJ, as well as the University Pain Medicine Center in Somerset, NJ. Fellows will also satisfy their Intubation and IV Sedation requirement at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. These facilities are centrally located in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.

Basic Qualifications to Apply:

Completion of an ACGME accredited residency, most often in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry or Neurology

Fellowship Objectives:

During the fellowship year, the trainee will:

• Learn and perform thorough assessments of patients in acute and chronic pain and develop and implement treatment plans using clinical and scientific data and patient preference
• Effectively communicate diagnoses and treatment plans to patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting
• Competently perform all medical and invasive procedures considered essential for managing pain which include, but are not limited to:
• Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar spinal interventions under Fluoroscopy including epidural injections, targeted facet blocks, radiofrequency ablation and sympathetic nerve blocks
• Placement of Spinal Cord Stimulators
• Minor and major joint or bursa injections
• Ultrasound-guided Nerve blocks and Joint injections
• Trigger point injections
• Regenerative medicine techniques
• Neurolytic techniques including chemical and radiofrequency ablation
• lntradiscal procedures including discography
• Placement of permanent spinal drug delivery systems
• Become well experienced in chronic opioid management including the pharmacologic basis for various anti-inflammatory, opioid and adjuvant medications in addition to awareness of adverse reactions and potential
• Be exposed to the psychiatric and psychological approaches to pain management
• Attend daily inpatient acute and chronic pain consultation rounds
• Demonstrate expertise in basic airway intubation
• Attend weekly lectures including journal clubs and incorporate the didactic teaching into the management of their patient’s pain
• Develop the ability to critically appraise evidence about treatment effectiveness as it relates to pain medicine and engage in a research
